I've been reading and hearing a lot about the BCTF lately, and figured I'd dig a little for myself to try to understand the issues they are fighting for with the BC government.
So, the minimum starting wage in our school district (33) is $42,802. The maximum wage for a long-term teacher with advanced education is $81,488. Teachers have (what appears to be) a solid benefits package, paying out 4.75% of their salary for their pensions and short/long term disability. I'm not sure on the other benefits, but since retired teachers were getting their extended health benefits paid for up until just recently, I'm going to guess that there isn't a big out of pocket cost to that.
Just for fun, I googled the median income for Chilliwack for comparison. In 2006 it was $39,154 for someone who worked the whole year. I'm sure with the significant increase in minimum wage in BC that # will be higher now. And that was 6 years ago, but it's something to look at, anyway.
